Can You Leave a Google Review Without a Google Account?
No. Google needs you signed in to post a review, and reviews can't be anonymous. But you don't need Gmail: any email address can become a Google account.
Short answer: no. Google only lets people post reviews while they are signed in to a Google account. But the account doesn't have to be Gmail, and creating one with an existing email address takes a couple of minutes.
This comes up all the time when a business shares its review link. The customer taps it, Google asks them to sign in, and they think they've hit a dead end. Here's what's going on and how to help.
Quick answer
You need to be signed in to a Google account to leave a Google review, and reviews can't be anonymous. You don't need Gmail: any email address can be used to create a Google account (Create account, then Use your existing email).
What Google says
Google's help page on writing reviews in Google Maps makes signing in the first step on every device. On an iPhone it reads: "Open the Google Maps app. Sign in to your Google account." The same page adds two points that matter:
- No anonymous reviews. "You're unable to add an anonymous review."
- Reviews are public. "All reviews are public and anyone can find what you add." The review shows under the name on the reviewer's Google profile.
So there is no guest or anonymous option. A direct review link can take someone straight to the stars, but it can't skip the sign-in.
You don't need Gmail
This is the part most people don't know. A Google account and a Gmail address are not the same thing. Google's help page on creating a Google account says: "You don't need to have a Gmail address to create a Google Account."
To create one with an email address you already use (Outlook, iCloud, Yahoo, a work address):
- Go to the Google sign-in page and choose Create account, then For my personal use.
- Enter your name and the basic details Google asks for.
- Choose Use your existing email and type your current email address.
- Enter the code Google emails you to verify the address.
- Set a password and finish the steps on screen.
You can then sign in to Google Maps with that email and leave the review.
If you're the customer
- Use Gmail, YouTube or Google Drive, or signed in to Google on an Android phone? You already have a Google account. Sign in with that.
- Signed in but the review won't post? Update the Google Maps app and check you picked the right business. Our guide to why Google reviews don't show up covers the other causes.
- Changed your mind? You can edit or delete your review later from Contribute then View your profile in Google Maps. If you edit it, the review's date changes to the date of the edit.
If you're the business asking for the review
Customers who are already signed in to Google on their phone won't notice the sign-in at all. For everyone else, a few things help:
- Say it up front. "It just needs a Google account, and any email works" saves a confused customer from giving up at the sign-in screen.
- Ask in person, then hand over the link. Someone who scans a QR code while you're still there can ask you about the sign-in screen. Someone who finds it at home alone often just closes the tab. Our guide on how to ask for a Google review has scripts.
- Have another platform ready. If a customer really doesn't want a Google account, a Facebook recommendation or a Trustpilot review is a fine alternative. See our Facebook review link guide. Each platform has its own sign-in.
- Never post it for them. Don't type the review into your own phone, sign them in to a staff account, or write it from what they told you. Google's contribution policy treats reviews from employees or the business as a conflict of interest, and they're likely to be removed.
- Don't offer anything for the trouble. Google bans incentives for reviews, including discounts and free services, even when the customer had to create an account to leave one.
Make the ask easy to say yes to. Plaudit: Review Card is an iPhone app that shows a branded QR code for your Google reviews, plus cards for Facebook and Trustpilot, so customers can pick the platform they already use.
