How to Respond to a 3-Star Review (Mixed Feedback)
How to reply to a 3-star or mixed review: thank them for the good, own the not-so-good, and win a second chance. Six examples for common mixed reviews.
A three-star review sits awkwardly in the middle. It is not praise and it is not a complaint, and most businesses either ignore it or reply as if it were a one-star attack. Both are mistakes.
Mixed reviews are the ones readers trust most, because they sound like real people. A thoughtful reply tells them a lot about how you treat customers.
How to reply to a mixed review
- Thank them for the part that worked. Be specific, and be honest.
- Name the part that didn't, in your own words, without defensiveness.
- Say what you'll do about it, or what you've already changed.
- Invite them back, with a reason to come.
Examples you can adapt
A mixed review is the most persuasive review on your page, because readers trust it. How you reply decides whether it helps or hurts.
Good product, slow service
“Food was great but we waited far too long. Three stars.”
Thanks for telling us, Emma. We're pleased the food was right and sorry about the wait, which was too long. We're looking at how we handle busy periods in the kitchen, and we hope you'll give us another go.
Why it works: It credits the good, owns the bad, and gives a reason for optimism. A mixed reviewer is already half-won.
Good work, poor communication
“The work itself was excellent but I had to chase twice for an update.”
Thank you, Daniel. I'm glad you're happy with the work, and you're right about the updates. You shouldn't have had to chase. We now send an update at each stage. Thanks for pointing it out.
Why it works: A specific fix is more convincing than 'we'll do better'.
Nothing special
“It was fine. Nothing special.”
Thanks for the honest feedback, Leah. We'd love to know what would have made it better for you, if you'd like to tell us at [email].
Why it works: 'Fine' is a warning sign, and an invitation costs nothing. Do not oversell in reply.
Staff were lovely, price was not
“Staff were lovely but it was pricey for what you get.”
Thank you for the kind words about the team, Ben. We try to be clear about what each price includes, and if it didn't feel like good value we'd like to hear why.
Why it works: You can't fix a price in a reply, so acknowledge it calmly and focus on the part you can.
Expecting a refund
“Product was okay but not what the photos showed. Want my money back.”
I'm sorry the product didn't match your expectations, Chloe. Please email [email] with your order number and we'll talk through a return or refund.
Why it works: A reviewer who asks for something wants to be answered. A concrete next step beats a defence.
A 3-star who says they'll be back
“A bit disappointed this time but we've always loved you, so we'll be back.”
Thank you for sticking with us, Sam. We're sorry this visit didn't live up to the others, and we'll take your comments on board. We look forward to getting it right next time.
Why it works: A loyal customer's lukewarm review is a gift. A short, warm reply reassures them.
What to avoid
- Treating the review as an attack. A three-star review is nearly always an honest one.
- Explaining why the reviewer was wrong. Even when they are, the reply is for the readers.
- Promising a fix you haven't made. Readers can tell, and the reviewer might come back to check.
- Asking the reviewer to update their stars. If you fix the problem, they may do so on their own.

Frequently asked questions
Is a 3-star review good or bad for my rating? +
It pulls the average down slightly, but it also makes your reviews look real. A page of nothing but five stars can look curated. How you reply to the three-star ones shows what you are like to deal with.
Should I reply to a 3-star review as seriously as a 1-star? +
Yes. A mixed reviewer is the most winnable of all, since they have already told you what would make them happy.
What if the 3-star review says nothing? +
Treat it like a mixed review with no detail: thank them, and invite them to tell you what would have made it better. We cover the rating-only case in our guide to replying to a review with no comment.
Can I ask a 3-star reviewer to try again? +
Yes, as an invitation to come back, not an instruction to change their review. Do not offer a discount tied to a better review.
