How to Reply to a Review With No Comment

How to reply to a Google review that is only a star rating: what to say to a 5-star, 3-star or 1-star with no text, with examples and when to leave it.

By Plaudit Team · Updated

Open your Google Business Profile and you will see that a good share of reviews are just stars, with no words. They count towards your rating and they appear on your page, and most businesses never reply to them because there is nothing to reply to.

You can still answer them, and doing so well takes thirty seconds. The trick is to reply to the rating, not to words that are not there.

Replying to a bare star rating

  1. Reply to the rating, not to words that aren't there. Don't guess what they meant.
  2. For high ratings: a short, warm thank-you, without inventing details.
  3. For low ratings: a short, humble invitation to tell you what went wrong.
  4. Keep it to one or two sentences. A long reply to no text looks odd.

Examples you can adapt

Many Google reviews are just stars. They still show on your profile, and a reply costs you thirty seconds.

5 stars, no text

“(5 stars, no comment)”

Thank you for the five stars! We really appreciate it.

Why it works: Stay short. There's nothing to pick up on, so adding detail you've invented would sound false.

4 stars, no text

“(4 stars, no comment)”

Thank you for the four stars. If there's anything we could do to make it five next time, we'd love to hear it at [email].

Why it works: A fourth star left open is a quiet signal. A gentle invitation, with no pressure, will occasionally get you something useful.

3 stars, no text

“(3 stars, no comment)”

Thank you for rating us. We'd be glad to hear what would have made it better. You can reach us at [email].

Why it works: A middle rating with no words is the hardest to read. Ask without presuming.

1 star, no text, from a customer you cannot identify

“(1 star, no comment)”

We're sorry you weren't happy. We'd really like to understand why and put it right, so please contact us at [email].

Why it works: You can't apologise for a specific thing, so apologise for the feeling and invite detail.

1 star, no text, from someone you suspect had a bad experience

“(1 star, no comment)”

We're sorry we let you down. If you can tell us what happened at [email], we'll look into it straight away.

Why it works: Don't name the incident you suspect. If you're wrong, you will look presumptuous. If you're right, it's your invitation to follow up privately.

5 stars, no text, from a name you recognise

“(5 stars, no comment, from a regular customer)”

Thank you, Sarah. It's always good to see you, and we appreciate the five stars.

Why it works: When you know who they are, a first name is the one detail you can add that is certain to be true.

What to leave out

  • Guessing the reason, such as 'sorry about the wait'. If you guess wrong, the reply makes you look careless.
  • Asking them to change the rating. A bare rating is the reviewer's view, and a reply that pressures them can look defensive.
  • Flagging a rating just because it has no text. A star rating with no comment is not, by itself, a reason to flag a review. Flag it only if it breaks the platform's policies.
  • Long replies. A paragraph to one star looks like a script.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to reply to a review with no comment? +

You don't, but a brief reply is cheap and visible. For low ratings it signals to everyone reading that you take them seriously, and for high ratings it is simply polite.

Should I reply to every 5-star rating with no comment? +

If you have the time, a short thank-you is nice. If volume is high, prioritise reviews with text and low ratings, then work through the rest when you can.

Can a rating with no comment be removed? +

Only if it breaks the platform's content policies, for instance by being fake engagement. A genuine customer who has not written anything is not a violation.

Why would someone leave stars and nothing else? +

Most people rate to be quick: it takes one tap. Others have nothing to add, or don't want to spell out a complaint. It's not necessarily anger, even at one star.
